November 1

It was a beautiful fall day in New York. The leaves are starting to change color here and it's so pretty. They fall to the ground too and I typically track them into my apartment, but it's more cute than annoying. I've never really experienced pretty fall colors, so I don't mind. :)

Today was productive. I went to a coffee shop with a friend from City Year and got a couple lesson plans done. I also worked on my resume....it's ALMOST done being edited. FINALLY. I'm just ready to have it completed.

It was 70 degrees yesterday. SO weird. And then it was 50 degrees today? Weird. It's like being in Louisiana with all these ridiculous weather changes.

Ready to get back to work tomorrow. I miss my kiddies. But overall, really good weekend. Went to dinner and drinks with some friends from City Year at Dallas BBQ, relaxed on Saturday, and got work done on Sunday. Decent weekend.

Schtuff

I walked up to this food cart by my apartment just to see if they had any Greek food. Well, turns out they didn't; HOWEVER, they did have a delicacy called COW FEET SOUP!!!???? Not okay....

I love my neighborhood. I had to go to the library to get some books for work today and as I was walking around there were families walking around with their kids in halloween costumes. SO CUTE. Mama's Pizzeria even had a sign in the window advertising trick or treating at their store from 4-6!

Service Day, Pigging Out, and other random thoughts.

I had a one day weekend. 6 days on the clock is hard and tiring, but the Service Day with ABC/Disney was pretty cool. We painted murals and walls at PS 129 in West Harlem. There were several actors and actresses from different Soap Operas there. Most of them were very nice and seemed genuinely happy to be doing community service. Wouldn't you know I found a southern boy with a thicker accent than my roommate's AND an LSU fan! We were conspiring to paint the walls purple and gold, but our plan got smashed. Oh well! At the end of the day, we had painted tons of things: walls of the basement with the word "welcome" in different languages, different fruits/veggies/healthy words in the cafeteria, canvas murals to hang around the school, and some different books and such in the library. It was a tiring day, but really cool to participate in some physical service at a school we don't typically work at. I really enjoyed working with the Civic Engagement team too.

Made up for the one day weekend on Saturday night...Woooo! Such a great game against Auburn. Sunday I laid on the couch alllll day. I don't think I moved for 8 hours. NICE. Jan and I ate so much on Sunday. Between the burrito, pizza, and Cinnastix, I'll be surprised if I can fit into my clothes.

This week is going pretty well at school. We did our last BBL 1.1 today (Bringing Books to Life, Unit 1, Lesson 1) and our teamlet ended on a really good note. The kids were just great today too. Even the challenging ones. I woke up on Monday morning SO ready to see them. I forgot how much I love working with children. Even when they mess up, it's hard to be upset with them.

For our EAST Harlem Committee, one of my jobs was to make the Event One Pager to hand out to potential representatives who will set up booths at our Career Fair. If anyone ever doubted the impact of City Year, take a look at these stats. I put them in the One Pager because they really drive home the idea of grassroots efforts.

  • Graduated more than 12,500 alumni - diverse young people between 17 and 24
  • Served more than 2,020,000 million children - 3rd through 9th grade students
  • Completed more than 20 million hours of service
  • Engaged more than 1,000,000 citizens in service
  • Established 20 locations: 19 in the United States and one in South Africa. Two new locations are in the launch phase: Milwaukee and London.
I'm sure some people wondered why I didn't get a "real job" with "real money" and, truthfully, it crossed my mind before I started City Year as well, but I wouldn't change my decision for the world. This is such a rewarding experience. I already know how hard of a time I'm going to have letting go of these kids at the end of the year.

I'll update more later this week as I think of things. Have a good week, everyone.

Amanda

Exciting things at work

Quite a few exciting things are happening at work, so here's a quick update on a few of these things.

This Friday and Saturday I have the opportunity to work alongside about 20 corps members and the Civic Engagement team to staff the ABC SoapNation Event. We will be doing a service project with Soap Opera stars...guess I should catch myself up on the latest in SoapWorld! I will be serving as a Paint Captain representing PS 50, so I'm quite excited for the opportunity.

I found out today that I will be serving on the External Affairs Team for our E.A.S.T. Harlem event this December. It's going to be a Financial and Career Planning Fair and Workshop put on by the Harlem Zone. Our job on the External Affairs Team involves designing and implementing the advertisement strategy for this event...should be very exciting. It's something I have not done in quite some time, but I KNOW I'm going to enjoy using my creativity here. Very exciting. I actually didn't even apply for the position, but everything happens for a reason. I'm really looking forward to working on this team!

Lastly, we were assigned our Corps Member Roles this week. I will be the Learning Coordinator for Starfish (after school program) at our school in Harlem. Once I dive more heavily into this position, I'll give updates. As I understand it, my job will be to oversee our afterschool program, coordinate with staff at City Year and at our school, and help with planning of Starfish lessons. Again, very exciting stuff!

I hope this helps some of you who want to know EXACTLY what I do each day. This is just a glimpse, but hope it helps.

Week 2 in school!

I just completed my second week of official work in PS 50. I feel like our work weeks go by so quickly, but the days seem to go by somewhat slowly. I suppose it's just because 10 hour work days are LONG no matter how you look at it. I'm enjoying getting to know the kids though. They really make this job so worth it. I'm lucky because I get to tutor kindergartners during after school, but I will be doing BBL lessons with the 3-5 graders. I'll get a wide range of ages I get to work with which is refreshing. There are some absolutely adorable children though. Even the little "monsters" are enjoyable. I just try to see the more difficult students as a challenge for me to change up my ways to reach them. We will be doing our first Bringing Books to Life (BBL) lesson on Monday and I'm SO excited. We did a run through on Friday and I'm feeling really confident...it's solid.

Our PS 50 team is officially named the Weird Pack. We were sitting around the office on Thursday and it just struck me how awesomely WEIRD everyone on our team is. SO, we now have a nickname just so everyone knows about it!

Jan and I did a little shopping today. I got the most amazingly cute headwrap from Anthropologie. It was totally worth the 24 dollars! We ate at this Cuban place by our apartment first which was so good. Afterward we went to this bar right by Jan's friend's apartment in NoHo to watch the Florida vs. Arkansas game. That was QUITE a game. Florida is stupid and is overrated. :) Andre and Brian came over to visit for a little while and see the apartment. Now, I'm just catching up on sleep and TV for the rest of the night....both of which are very necessary.

Woooooo. okay goodnight!

Lately

So... it's been awhile! Sorry everyone. Work has definitely picked up over the past few weeks, but here's a little taste of what's been going on in my life here.

We finished training last week and received all our reds and other uniform parts. I thought I would hate the uniform initially, but I really like it. The kids recognize and LOVE City Year. I just finished my first full week in the school today. Our team has bonded, we are getting our lessons together, and getting more and more comfortable with the teachers, administration, and kids at the school. I had forgotten how much I love working with children. Some of these kids just melt my heart. They really are little angels. I realize every day when I go to work how much I have to be thankful for. That's all I could ever ask for in a job.

I was so lucky to have my bestieee Lizzie come visit me in New York for a few days over LSU's fall break. We had such a fun time! We saw Fame (the movie), In the Heights, explored around the East Village, drank too much wine (oops), watched the LSU game, went to the Astoria Beer Gardens, and just were plain lazy on Sunday (and maybe a liiiiittle sappy)--the NEW way to Channel Sunday! SO much fun. Made me realize how much I miss home, but how thankful I am for the people in my life.

Some funny and cool stuff happened at work this week, but here are just a few of the stories!

1. I got to lead final circle one day- that was pretty cool to get to step up into that role when our two bosses couldn't be there.
2. Approximately 12 fourth graders braided my hair on Thursday during recess- it was pretty awesome looking I have to say!
3. One of the little girls I tutor in the afternoon is so incredibly smart. She's only in kindergarten and read me an entire book that was above her level in the 100 Book Challenge the other day. She also decided it was a good idea to write my name on the outside wall of the school in the yard. OOPS! Looks like I will permanently be a part of this school! haha
4. I got to speak a little bit of French to a little girl from Africa who speaks "only French"--which I now think is a lie. I think she can understand a little English and is just pulling everyone's leg! She is so cute, but is a little troublemaker. I imagine I was a little bit like her as a child! haha
5. Oh, and I made a kid cry. OOPS!

The kids really make my day. I don't think any of this would be worth it if they weren't so amazing.

I am now preparing to leave for Baton Rouge in just a few hours. I'm SO excited to be home for a few days!!!!

Good Morning America!

Be sure to tune in to Good Morning America tomorrow morning to see some very excited City Year New Yorkers on the show!

This week...

Well, it's been a very busy, but fun week. We had training on Monday and Tuesday. We are spending more and more time in our schools getting ready to begin our hardcore year of service on October 5! I also had an interview for a second job on Monday at Ann Taylor Loft; however, I won't be able to work there because of my hours. Shoot....back to the drawing board I guess!

Wednesday through Friday was our BTA (Basic Training Retreat) at Camp Vacamas in New Jersey. (Camp Vacamas hosts kids from the Bronx and Brooklyn on the weekends and during the summer.) It was so nice to get out of the city for a few days and just be around nature. Of course, my allergies were ridiculous and were acting up almost the whole time....but not a big deal! On the first day, we did a challenge course with many activities....some that I have done before and some that I have not. Our team was frustrating me quite a lot at the beginning of the rotation. We definitely were not following the "one mic" rule at all. However, it was so rewarding to see an improvement with each activity we did. I saw growth in our team from activity 1 to the final one we did that day. It's amazing how nature can have that effect on people. We spent a great deal of time bonding, getting to know ourselves and our teams better, and learning more about the work we'll do this year. I have a great deal of respect for the people on my team...they are just awesome. We are all so different, but we are meshing together quite beautifully. Since day 1, I've really felt like we have SUCH a good corps. I just felt there was something special about us, and I found out this weekend that many people, including staff, feel the same way. Some said that this BTA was the best they had been to in 4, 5, or 6 years! What an incredible compliment! I'm lucky to have the team I have and the awesome leadership to work under.

Just so you have an idea of what we did at the retreat....ate 3 times a day (my favorite part), completed a challenge course, did team building activities such as "Spotlight" and Crossing the Line, experienced an amazing Talent show, learned more about Ubuntu (look it up if you don't know what it means!), and stayed up late and woke up early. It was so worth it! I was ready to come back to the city, but it was great.

I got home and CRASHED. I was supposed to just take a nap from 8-10, but I never woke up to my alarm! :( BOOOO.

Today, I got to meet up with Kelli, Brook and Parish for the Buddy Walk! First, we watched the opening video in Times Square--Parish was featured in it! SUCH a famous baby. Then, we rode the school buses provided for us to Central Park to do the 1 mile walk. An actor from Scrubs was at the event (he plays Dr. Perry something I think??) and a host from the Early Show. Pretty cool...you know I love famous people! :) Parish was just so precious the whole time. He is such a happy baby. Several Ambassadors that live in NY came out to support Parish on his big day. I'm so glad I got to spend some time with them. What a great day!

Now, I'm just back at the apartment probably about to take a nap. We are going to Blockheads later which is quickly becoming my favorite place to eat!

It's been awhile....

Soooo....I haven't updated in awhile. We got placed into our final teams last week and in our schools for City Year! It was very exciting. It's nice to finally see what I'll be doing. Interacting with the kids has been the highlight of my week. The administration at our school is also excellent--I feel really lucky to get to work with such amazing leaders.

My mom also came to visit from Thursday evening through Sunday. We had a great time. We saw Burn the Floor (with almost all SYTYCD alumni), did some major shopping, and ate at some really great places. I like Mexican food again? YES, it's true. We got to go to the San Gennaro Italian festival on Mulberry street too.

I'm really sleeeeepy, so I'm going to go now, but I hope everyone is doing well!

GAMEDAY

Never a dull moment with gameday in New York!  I had a such a good time last night.  We started off at Legends to hang with a bunch of LSU Alumni and watch the game.  I thought we played pretty well overall. Me and Brian went to eat Wendy's before the game (GROSS!) because the food there is so expensive; however, the drink specials are GREAT!  Plus, we got free Miller for whatever reason.  All we had to do was take a picture in a Miller hat and get free beer!  HELLO. CLEARLY AMAZING! After the game, we went to a bar in the West Village that reminded me of Reggies...packed and ridiculous. After that, people decided they were hungry so we got some food at some place in the area.  I didn't order anything, and just ate the leftovers and got a full meal :) THANK YOUUUU, I'M SO GOOD! Gotta love mooching off people. just kidding. kind of.

Today, we are having a picnic with some City Year people in Central Park.  I think I'm also going to do some grad school work as well at Silver Moon Bakery--fabulous outdoor place. LOVE IT.

Happy Sunday, everyone :)

September 11

Just wanted to write a little bit about September 11 in New York...

8 years ago, I was a freshman in high school and, like most of us, I distinctly remember, what I was doing, what I was wearing, who I was with, and how I felt when I heard about the planes crashing into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.  It's just kind of eerie to even think about.

It didn't hit me until I woke up on Friday morning that I'm living in the same place where these events happened.  Just 8 years ago, it could have been me and so many of the people I've come to enjoy in this city.  Many of the people I've met through City Year are from New York and lived first hand through the attacks and that's difficult for my brain to even fathom.

During training that day, we had a morning of reflection and observed a moment of silence to remember the attacks.  Instead of having trainings during the day, we went out and did physical service to help the communities around us.  My crazy team (NIGHT INTO DAY!) went to Staten Island to work in a Women's and Children's shelter. I believe the shelter is called Project Hospitality.

Me and 9 other people from the Harlem zone got a chance to go to the 9/11 Commemorative Ceremony at Beacon Theatre.  It was awesome.  Although it was quite jam packed with speakers, each of them had a unique message that I took away with me.  The speaker that hit home the most with me was a firefighter whose son (also a firefighter) died when the North Tower fell.  He also sustained many damaging effects from working at Ground Zero after the fact.  At one point, he was in the hospital and doctors told his family he only had 6 days to live--and sure enough he was healthy as a horse at this ceremony!  The road wasn't easy though.  He had to relearn how to walk, talk, and just generally function which is quite a feat. Throughout the ceremony, the Roots, Gavin DeGraw and the lead singer from Five for Fighting shared some of their music.  Gavin sang Belief (one of my favorite songs) and it was absolutely AWESOME.  The Harlem Boys and Girls Choir sang too--it was cool to see a performance from people in the community I'll be working in.  All in all, a very good night.

September 10

Tomorrow, in memory of the September 11 tragedy, we are forgoing training and having service days in several sites all over New York City.  My small group is going to Staten Island to work in a hospital (I believe...).  I'll update more on that later.

Some really exciting news...
Me a 9 other corps members from Harlem get to go to this huge event in remembrance of September 11.  I don't know a whole lot of details, but I do know that Gavin DeGraw will be there along with The Roots, Hilary Clinton, and Jimmy Fallon.  I also heard a rumor that Anne Hathaway will be there.  Should be meaningful and exciting to get to attend this event in New York City-a place that was so deeply affected by 9/11.  It's also very exciting to get to represent City Year for the first time.

On a side note, I'm very frustrated with UPS.  Just in case anyone was wondering!

Week 2, Day 1

Some random thoughts about today...
  • I am very sleepy, but had a very good day.
  • I LOVE my new crazy team. NIGHT INTO DAY!
  • We learned more about Whole School Whole Child (the program we actually implement in schools) today and I'm officially more excited than I have ever been before to work with kids. I'm ready to get started! :)
  • I never thought I would say this, but my Psychology degree is actually helping me in a lot of aspects in this program.  EX: How to work with people, how kids think, etc.  You know, the works.
  • I worked out after training today and I'm definitely extra sleepy because of it.  This is good.  Maybe I won't stay up until 2 a.m. again.

I took this quiz on facebook called "Where should you live?" or something like that.  I don't remember the location it gave me (oops), but this was the description with it.  I just thought I would share!  I hope I end up like this person.

You prefer pine trees to palm trees, rivers to oceans, and mountains to skyscrapers. You pride yourself on your independence and open-minded attitude. You consider yourself extremely self-sufficient, but you have an extremely close-knit group of friends and family that you would do anything for. Everyone that knows you adores you and you have absolutely no enemies. You don't envy those with money, nice cars, or huge mansions, because you know that "the finer things" in life aren't material. You are extremely well-educated and will most definitely end up in a career that will make a difference in the world. Although you know you don't need to be in a relationship to be happy, you will be completely and entirely lovestruck by someone that is enamored by your inner beauty.

GOODNIGHT, WORLD!

Happy Labor Day!

I hope everyone had a happy Labor Day today!  I missed spending the day with my family at the camp, but I know they all had a great time.

I woke up early this morning, went to the gym, and then went to this cute bakery a few blocks from our apartment.  Apparently, it's kind of famous.  It's called the Silver Moon Bakery and it kind of reminds me of Louie's only because once they run out of stuff, it's gone for the day.  Jan and I went, had a few cups of coffee, she read, and I got some grad school work done which was exciting. So far, my plan is to apply to five schools, but we'll see where the wind takes me.  :)

We start up with BTA (Basic Training Academy) again in the morning and I'm excited to meet my new crazy team for the week.  It's always exciting to get to start working with new people.  We are also wearing a semi-City Year uniform tomorrow.

Looking forward to a busy, but fun week!

I'm also SO excited for all the visitors that are coming soon!  I can't wait.  My mom will be here in 10 days to kick off "visiting season."  We are going to shop and possibly go to Ellis Island.  Whatever she wants to do is what we'll do!  I'm looking forward to spending some time with her.

On that note, I'm going to try to get some sleep....finally.  I know I'll regret not going to sleep earlier in the morning.

NIGHTY NIGHT!

Recap, LSU Game, Life is Good :)

City Year Training Week 1.........check
  • Got a good feel of the neighborhood where I'll be working, and I like it quite a lot.  Harlem seems to really be growing.  There are new developments popping up everywhere.  I see a bright future for that particular neighborhood.  Also, out of all the different zones CYNY corps members will be working in, Harlem has the highest graduation rate.  Although it is still lower than the standard, it's still something to be proud of.
  • Another corps member and I had a little bit of difficulty working our way through the Bronx public transportation system, and it took us an extra hour to get home friday. JOY! Not the highlight of my day.
  • I enjoyed my "crazy team" this week.  (Crazy teams are temporary teams that we are put into each week during training)  We were all very different and quirky in our own ways, but we meshed well together as a unit.  I'm excited to see who will be on my team starting Tuesday--Monday off for labor day! WOO!
  • We did something called the "Leadership Compass" on Thursday to find out what our work styles are.  There was a 10 question survey to determine your "direction."  Well, wouldn't you know 6 out of my 10 answers were "West" meaning analytical, detail-oriented, organized, etc.  I had no idea I was so one sided!  In some cases, I guess that can be a good thing, but it will be something I work on this year to be less of one style and more balanced.  Always a good thing right?  :)
My first LSU football game with the AMAZING alumni chapter..........check
  • The game didn't start until 10:30 in New York, but that didn't stop the badass Alumni chapter from going crazy!  There were purple and gold shirts, screaming fans, hurricanes, beer, and food.  We all gather at a bar called Legends on 33rd and 5th.  They put the game on all of their tvs, have drink and food specials, and play LSU music!  It was SO good to hear pregame.  I'm going to miss being in the stadium with my friends so much, but this will definitely help to make me miss it just SLIGHTLY less.
Sending my laundry "out" for the first time....check
  • Speaking of sending laundry out, I love the convenience of New York. Subways are close by, there are 24 hour stores everywhere and you can always find cheap food SOMEWHERE.  It's great!

Sundays are me and Jan's "try new places to eat" days.  We decided that we are going to be good girls and make food at home all week, but each Sunday we'll go to a different place and try something new!  Today, I think we are getting brunch at a place called Regional.  $5 dollar unlimited mimosas!

Have a great day everyone!

Something Cute

Just bought lemonade from some of my precious neighbors from two buildings down.  :)  They were so sweet.  There were some children and then two moms from the building sitting on the steps with them.  They approached me and asked me if I wanted some lemonade for 50 cents.  I channeled South Louisiana (not New York), and stopped to talk with them for a few minutes.  They were absolutely precious....and it made my day.

On a side note, I've dealt with nothing but nice people in New York.  I don't know where that "mean New Yorker" stereotype comes from!

More about Training Day 3 later!

CYNY Day 2

Random Thoughts from Today....
  • I had PinkBerry last night...YUMMY!!!
  • I ate a whole pineapple in two days.
  • I have the CYNY Roll Call stuck in my head. and I like it!
  • "Learned" the bus system today.  Wish me luck in the morning finding slash actually catching the bus.
  • We did a team building activity today involving a maze that I haven't done since FOAP two years ago.  It was interesting to do it again! It felt slightly easier two years ago. Weird.
  • SYTYCD Best 15 performances AND Glee are on tonight.  Life can't get better.
  • Anybody got extra khaki pants they want to donate to me? :)
  • Looking forward to Labor Day Weekend and the first FOOTBALL GAME! GEAUX TIGERS!
Have a great evening, everyone!

CYNY Day 1

It's going to be a good year.  Today we talked about finding 3 things that will keep us going even when we're tired.  Here's my list.

1) Family
2) Faith
3) Friends...old and new

THE END.

Coney Island

Today, Jan and I ventured to Coney Island before they shut down for the season.  The commute took a little over 2 hours round trip, but it was worth it!

Okay, I've got to admit, it was a little janky.  Kind of like a trashy version of Fun Fair Park; HOWEVER, we did get to visit a beach and ride a rollercoaster all in the same place.  The board walk was nice too.

We ate yucky fair food too.  I haven't had ice cream in forever, and I could kick myself for eating it now, but I guess it's part of the experience.

First day of City Year Training tomorrow!  I'm really excited to get started.  Let's get the show on the road!

Here are a few pictures from today.

Me and Jan on the beach.
Me on the boardwalk.  I miss the water!

New Pictures

Adventures in Times Square with Jan and Allison--Roomies at SROW 2007!

Me with the Purple and Gold flags in the background.  This is one block from our apartment!  It was also a "sign" that we knew this apartment was THE place!

Someone REALLY loves MJ.  We found this painted on the sidewalk on Broadway.

Last night....

OOPS! Forgot to update about last night....

Dinner with some friends from college at Blockheads in Midtown. 3 dollar margaritas and good food thank youuu.  We channeled tourists and went to Times Square for a mini-photo shoot afterward and enjoyed some Junior's cheesecake!

I'll leave you with a question to ponder. I bet you don't know the answer..... Do birds pee?  See, if you had been with us last night, you'd know the answer by now!

Around the Neighborhood

Jan and I just got back from a two hour walk around our UWS neighborhood.  We, hands down, picked the best neighborhood in Manhattan to live in.  It's student and family friendly and there's cheap food, drinks, and fun places to go.

We started off with a short walk in Riverside park since the weather is sunny and beautiful today. Then, we visited Columbia University today too.  And wouldn't you know they were having ORIENTATION and move-in day!  We saw a ton of Columbia Orientation leaders, and, of course, paparazzi-ed them.  We got pictures...don't worry :)  Their campus is absolutely gorgeous.  The buildings are old, but well kept and pristine. I don't think I could see myself there as a student, but it's something to appreciate.

We got back a few hours later and we were STARVING, but it was quite worth it!

Mass tonight.

2 days until CYNY Training starts :)

REAL PRICE GROCERIES

I have an update on groceries.

We made a trip to Brooklyn yesterday- not a bad subway ride, about 30 minutes from the apartment- to the Target on Atlantic and let me tell you I almost cried because they had REGULARLY PRICED GROCERIES!  I was so happy.  Now I don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on stupid food. Thank goodness :)

Today, Jan and I are going to the Natural History Museum with Allison Dugas--a friend of ours from LSU!  Back in the day, we were all roommates at SROW 2007 and now we're all in New York.  Funny how that happens.  I'm so excited for this museum--I love the movie Night at the Museum, so I'm extra excited!

Yesterday it got a little "chilly"--basically, it felt like Louisiana in November!  Then I realized that in about a month I will be regularly freezing my butt off. EEK!  I hope I'm prepared!

Random Thought....

I was sitting on the subway earlier just thinking about how lucky I am to be here :)

Future Southern New Yorkers...

Make sure you pack the following:

-Hangers...a pack of 6 is $5.99. NOT OKAY.
-Tonys and CCs Coffee...clearly.
-Any and all non-perishable food you can.
-Mayonnaise. Now this may seem weird. HOWEVER, after paying 6 dollars for a jar of mayo today, I feel that I should have just packed it and called it a day.
-more to come later.

Now, onto some apartment pics :)

Above: Jan's Room

Above: My "cage" as Jan calls it.

Above: Chilling in the living room :)

Only in New York

1.  Jan orders a textbook from Barnes and Noble at 11:00 a.m.  It arrives at our door at 6 p.m. How long do YOU wait for books to arrive?

2.  Our Tuscan fat free milk's expiration date reads like this: "Sell by September 3rd; NYC September 1"  Can anyone tell me why milk in New York expires 2 days earlier?

First Day!

Hi everyone!

Today is my first full day in the Big Apple, so I'm still getting settled in.  But here are some of the highlights so far!

-Getting my first "Geaux Tigers" in the airport.

-Arriving and finding out we already have DVR. YESSSS.

-My UPS boxes arriving early to the apartment!

Today's adventures included City Year orientation (!!!!) and some minor Bed Bath and Beyond shopping which involved me carrying a giant mirror throughout Manhattan public transportation.... oops! At least I didn't hit anyone.

PS- In case anyone ever denied that I'm a huge nerd, TAKE IT BACK.  I was ridiculously excited about orientation this morning.  It just makes me happy!  Ambassadors, I remember sometimes forgetting how much we mean to nervous incoming students.  I got a little reminder of that today.  The friendly faces really made me feel welcomed.  Don't be like me and forget that :)

Love and miss you all!
